Reality Check 5G IoT: Revolution Delayed?

This paper provides a critical evaluation of 5G in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT), questioning whether 5G has truly lived up to its promises. When 5G was introduced, it was presented as a revolutionary technology for IoT, with claims of faster speeds, ultra-low latency, and support for massive device connectivity. However, many of the anticipated use cases can also be realized with existing LTE networks, leading to skepticism about whether 5G's advantages are more than just marketing claims.

By examining real-world applications, we explore the gap between 5G's potential and its actual usage, as well as the reasons for this. While the technology may have demonstrated unique benefits in specific scenarios, many promised use cases remain unrealized or deliver only incremental improvements.

We also reference data from two studies in which we participated and which were conducted by IDG Foundry — Comprehensive Enterprise Connectivity 2024 and Industrial IoT 2025 — to illustrate the actual shares of cellular technologies and the use cases they are being used for.
